If you are interested in teaching or helping students who have disabilities, Ms. San Nicolas at JFKHS is providing this service learning opportunity to give these special students support.  If you do not attend JFKHS and would like to use this project as a model, please do. You can either find a teacher at your school who would support you, or contact Ms.San Nicolas at JFK for guidance on how to proceed.

We support our GDOE Mission Statement To prepare students for life, promote excellence, and provide support and the JFKHS (SLO)'s for our students to be Responsible Citizens, Problem Solvers, Effective Communicators and Technologically Literate. For example, you will create products celebrating the holidays for students in the Resource Room. All products will include vocabulary words to support their learning of language. You may also assist students with disabilities in recreational games or class work to increase all students' self-esteem.

Activity Instruction:
After arranging a schedule and the service learning activity with Ms. San Nicholas, please follow her instructions on what your task will be in working with these students. 
Some examples of support include: 
1) supporting students with disabilities to expand their social circles by being a lunch, club, or organization activity buddy and  support person at high school milestones for example: athletic events, Close Up Zumba nights, WAY picnics, activities, prom, and graduation in support of JFKHS SLO's to be responsible citizens who value respect for others and diversity.
2) supporting any student who needs assistance with technology projects, for example, google slides, documents, creating video PSA's to support JFKHS SLO's for all our student's to use technology responsibly and effectively. 
3) advocating for and assisting any GDOE students who wish to collaborate and to create similar peer support programs for students with special needs at their home school to earn service learning in support of our GDOE Mission statement to prepare students for life, promote excellence, and provide support. 
 

Reflection Instruction:
In order for students to earn Service Learning hours, you will need to submit a reflection demonstrating the service learning. You should address: What did you do? What did you learn? What character traits did I demonstrate in this project? (trustworthiness, honesty, courtesy, respect, responsibility, accountability, self-reliance) What was the service? How did I feel about being able to help students who have special needs?
