Excellent project for a group of students. Can be done through UOG Cooperative Extension or Island Girl Power Community Garden Locations. Adopt a lot on the community garden. Grow produce and donate to your school for fundraising efforts or for people with disabilities. More community gardens can be created around the island.

Preparation Instruction:
  • Science- To help people learn more about the techniques of gardening, successfully.
  • English- Essay or report on why this project is important, how and what plants were selected, how to sustain a garden lot, how many times a week must plants be watered, how long did it take to harvest items?
  • Math- Math formulas can be used when measuring the area of the garden, the depth to plant the seeds or seedlings, and the number of plants needed to fill the area of the garden if each plant was 4-6” apart.
  • Chamorro- Research can be done to highlight the local recipes and what produce was used. Maybe the students can make a cookbook and sell them to benefit the school or a community organization.

Learning Standards/Objectives:
  • To promote Guam’s first Community Gardens. Build awareness of this type of gardening as opposed to farming or growing for business. This gardening encourages food sustainability.
  • To empower our residents to do simple projects around their homes or in their villages to allow fruits and vegetables to become more readily available.
