Ironkids After School Program 2019-2020

Ironkids After School Program 2019-2020

Love working with kids, making an impact and changing the future? Then sign up for this project to  tutor and help out at Ironwood Housing in Dededo and Tamuning. Volunteers are expected to assist in daily homework with elementary school kids, provide support in arts and crafts,  and monitor child safety. Light duty cleaning is also expected. Students who participate in this project must be able to socially interact with younger children. You will have a chance to earn up to 11 hours per week, depending on your actual participation, if it is satisfactory, and upon completion of your reflection.

Preparation Instruction:
Contact the person listed below to sign up. Ms. Guevara will give you details as to expectations and schedule. You will need to have a parent permission form signed and attend a short orientation prior to beginning your service.

Activity Instruction:
As a volunteer it is your responsibility to make sure pencils are sharpened and lined paper is provided to kids if needed. You are offering help, not answers.  For arts and crafts, all materials will be provided. A sample of the project will be shown and detailed on how to execute it. Ensure that homework is being done properly, giving these kids a sense of pride in completing their assignments with minimal help. Assisting with arts and crafts is also to a minimum as to be sure that kids complete it on their own. As you engage in games with them,  ensure child safety and proper game play.

Reflection Instruction:
There will be a 2 part reflection required to receive hours and certificate of completion. 1streflection is expected after the 2ndweek of service. Topics include: What have you learned?  What areas do you need to improve? What was your weakness? What is something Ironkids could do differently to improve? 2ndreflection is due upon 5thweek and include: What have the kids taught you? What do you believe is the most inspirational attribute you have taught the kids? What is the most important factor you believe you took away from this experience?

Make sure you address clearly to your GDOE teacher who you will need to show this to so he/she can input it into your Power School records: What did you do? What did you lesrn? How was this a service to the community?

Learning Standards/Objectives:
The objective is to build a lifelong structure of self appreciation to the kids. To give them a sense of pride in the school work and arts and crafts they complete. Providing a listening ear encourages them to be honorable young adults as they get older.
