Come out to plant trees with UOG Sea Grant G.R.O.W (Guam Restoration of

Watersheds) Initiative to help restore the Ugum Watershed!

The community plantings will be held on Saturdays September 7, October 5, November 9. Students will be taken on a 30-minute tour of our project site in Ugum. The tour will include an educational lesson on watersheds and GROW’s goals for Ugum. The tour will end with the students planting trees. All holes are pre-drilled by the GROW team. The students will have to pull the tree sapling out of the pod, drop it down the hole, pour some fertilizer, and then cover it with dirt from the side.


Preparation Instruction:
  • Ensure students rest well
  • hydrate the day before
  • have a good breakfast
  • Bring a refillable bottle
  • Bring sun block
  • wear hiking or closed-toe shoes (use shoes with grip)

The students will learn:

  • about why we use acacia trees as our method to restore the badlands.
  • the importance of why we are restoring these badlands.
  • the importance of watersheds to Guam.

Activity Instruction:
  • We will plant acacia trees in a badland area to help restore the area

Learning Standards/Objectives:

Standard 2: Life Science

Students understand the diversity and unity of living organisms, the living environment, and the principles of ecology.

BI.2.27: Understand and explain the significance of the introduction of species, such as the brown tree snake and other invasive species into Guam’s ecosystem and describe the consequent harm to native species and the environment in general.

Standard 5: Responsible Personal and Social Behavior

Students exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
