  • Description

Guam Forestry and Soil Resources Division has an ongoing reforestation project within the Manell Watershed located in the beautiful southern village of Merizo.  The effort is to reforest our southern ridges to reduce erosion, flooding and wildfires that regularly plague southern Guam.  The planting event taking place this weekend, October 22, 2016 conincides with the Fiestan Tasi taking place in Merizo connecting our ridge-to-reef efforts.  Approximately 2,600 acacia trees will be planted this weekend and we hope to have a number of volunteers to support us in this effort.

Location:  Quinene Road, Merizo (large "Tree Planting" signs will be posted on either side of Quinene Road marking the turn)

    Date:  Saturday, October 22, 2016

    Time:  8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

    Career Pathway/Field

    Forestry, Biology, Science

    Objective

Students will learn that protecting and enhancing our forest resources supports healthier marine resources and water quality.

Students will need to submit a reflection to the teacher who will log in their service learning hours into their school records. The reflection should include: What the project was, what the service was, what you learned, what did you learn about yourself as a result of this project.

    Instructions

Participants will be divided into planting groups and guided by Forestry Aides upon arrival.  Gloves will be provided but feel free to bring your own pair if you have a favorite.  We will be planting and fertilzing plants as we go.  Make sure you protect your cameras if you bring them because we are planting rain or shine.  This is a FUN and BEAUTIFUL opportunity that very few people on island have had the pleasure of experiencing!

Appropriate attire for participants:  Close-toed shoes and a water bottle are required.  We will provide water in 5-gallon igloos, but everyone must bring their own waterbottles. Stay hydrated!   We recommend participants wear long socks or long pants to protect yourself from the tall grasses, a hat, sunblock and even a snack.  There is no shade on the hill. Stay hydrated!

    Comments about the Project Location

The project site is located on Government of Guam property accessed through private property so parking is limited.  We recommend car-pooling if possible. The planting site is  accessed after a short hike uphill with picturesque views.  The ground will be uneven and possibly slippery if wet, so hiking shoes or shoes with good tread are recommended.
