  • Description

The GCC EcoWarriors is a designated site leader for the 2016 Guam International Coastal Clean-up (GICC). We are seeking volunteers to assist in the cleaning-up of one of the identified illegal dumping sites on island (i.e. Marbo Cave, Mangilao). Volunteers are expected to pick-up, sort, haul, stage debri and assist with other duties involving this clean-up. Students will get a sense of accomplishment with this beautifcation project and gain a new appreciation for the natural environment. In addition, students will see first-hand, one of the many environmental issues we face today, illegal dumping.

    Hospitality and Tourism

The objective of the 2016 GICC is to promote involvement in environmental stewardship and to restore the natural beauty of Guam's coastal zones by cleaning up debri (trash) and sustainably diverting waste as to minimize stress on the local landfill.

Meeting spot: Marbo Cave stagging site (halfway zone)- Drive into the road leading to Marbo Cave and keep an eye out for our tent.

    Start time: 7:00 AM

    End time:  11:30 AM

Attire: Wear shoes, bring a hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, dress comfortably. Stay hydrated!! Bring a reusable water bottle and a bucket to minimize waste.

    * You must fill-out the waiver of liability before proceeding with the clean-up. If you are below 18 years of age, see "warning and notices".

    * We recommend working in groups of 3-5. Volunteers must seperate waste collected by type; i.e recyclables (plastic 1&2, aluminum, metals, cardboard), white goods, and regular trash (to include tires and other non-recyclable material). Refrain from going more than 15-20' into the jungle. Any bulky items can be left on the side of the road for pick-up later. PLEASE PRACTICE SAFETY AT ALL TIMES! SAFETY IS PRIORITY!

Students will earn 1 hour for every hour of service action involved in the cleanup. They will earn their additional 6th hour upon completion of their reflection. Sample reflection questions: In what way was the Coastal Cleanup a service activity? What did you learn? (Example: what kinds of trash did you clean up? What damage does trash to do to the land and the ocean?) What message will you give to others about littering and pollution? Why should we care about littering? ) Upload your reflection to your dashboard on this website.
